What are your favourite outdoor activities?
Walking, mountain biking, road biking, gravel riding and fishing. If I was pushed to say my absolute favourite it would be mountain biking. Nothing like flying down a hill at speed.
I've been walking in the hills for 14 years but I have loved local walks since I was a teen in the girl guides. I've been into road biking for 12 years, and 18 months ago took up mountain biking and more recently gravel biking.
What are you hoping to achieve in 2025?
I would like to cycle my first 100 miles (known as a century in cycling terms). I plan to do the woman v ride cancer in London in May with 4 friends which is 100km. I plan to walk 5 munro and include a camp. I want to take up bike packing- I see this as a way of talking me to places further than I can achieve on foot. I am not sure if it will be this year but I want to cycle the Outer Hebrides. Despite all this will be doing my walks as a volunteer for Every Body Outdoors - a group that I am very proud to be part off.
What do you love most about being in the outdoors?
What I love most about being outdoors is the freedom it brings—it’s like hitting a reset button for my mind. Whether I’m cycling through scenic trails or just walking in the fresh air, being outside helps me feel grounded and reconnected with myself. I love the sense of accomplishment that comes from pushing my limits, whether it’s tackling a long ride or braving the cold on a winter adventure. The outdoors reminds me that my body is capable, strong, and deserving of joy, no matter its size or shape. It’s not just about the activity; it’s about feeling alive, present, and part of something bigger.
How has walking and cycling changed the way you think about yourself?
Whether it’s cycling, hiking, or simply being outdoors - it has completely changed the way I view myself. It’s helped me shift my focus from what my body looks like to what it can do. I’ve learned to appreciate my strength, resilience, and the joy that comes from moving in nature. It’s also built my confidence, not just in my physical abilities but in trusting myself to take on new challenges. Over time, it’s made me kinder to myself—I now celebrate progress, not perfection, and I’ve learned that I’m capable of more than I ever thought possible.
Has being plus sized affected how you take part?
I am proud to say that it does not. If you had asked me this question 18 months prior to seeing and reading the work that Every Body Outdoors has done I would have had a very different response.
Have you faced any particular challenges with clothing or equipment?
Absolutely—I’ve faced plenty of challenges when it comes to finding clothing and equipment that fits well and performs properly. As someone in a plus-sized body, it’s been frustrating at times to find outdoor gear that’s both functional and designed for different body shapes. Many brands seem to overlook the need for extended sizes, or if they do offer them, the fit is often awkward, and the options are limited.
Waterproof jackets that don’t ride up, cycling gear that actually stays in place, and comfortable layers that don’t restrict movement are all things I’ve had to search hard for. Thankfully, brands like Vampire Outdoors are helping to fill this gap, making it easier for people like me to enjoy the outdoors without worrying about whether my gear will hold up or fit properly. It’s made a huge difference in my confidence and comfort during outdoor adventures.
One experience that really stands out for me was when I first started going on longer walks and hikes. I struggled to find waterproof jackets and trousers that fit properly. Most of the options I could find either didn’t go up to my size or were so poorly designed that they rode up, felt restrictive, or left gaps that let in the wind and rain. On one particular walk, I got caught in heavy rain, and because my jacket didn’t fit well, I ended up soaked and freezing. It was uncomfortable and frustrating, and it made me question whether I really belonged in those spaces. I walked with my slim husband and despite the elements he always looked cosy and comfortable.
Another challenge was finding well-fitting walking trousers. Many would either be too tight in one area or too loose in another, making it hard to move comfortably. Over time, I realised how important it is to have properly designed outdoor clothing—not just for comfort, but to help you stay focused on enjoying the experience, rather than worrying about your gear. It is nice to wear nice fitting gear that is practical but also looks cool and allows you to ‘fit in’.
That’s why I’m so passionate about brands like Vampire Outdoors, who are offering clothing that actually fits and performs for people of all sizes. Having the right gear has made such a difference, allowing me to fully enjoy my walks and hikes without feeling self-conscious or uncomfortable.
Has anything changed in these respects over the past few years?
Another big change has been how I think about inclusivity in the outdoor world. A few years ago, it felt like there weren’t many options for plus- sized people who wanted high-quality gear, but that’s finally starting to shift. More brands are recognising that everyone, regardless of size, deserves to enjoy the outdoors comfortably. Seeing this change—and being part of it as an ambassador—has been incredibly empowering. It’s made me realise how important representation is and how much confidence can come from simply having the right clothing and feeling seen.
What’s your favourite piece of clothing or gear from Vampire Outdoors so far?
The merino wool top and bottoms. I lived in the North East of Scotland where the temperatures are -8C and I have walked each day with these layers on underneath and I have been very comfortable. Merino can sometimes cause me irritation but not the Outdoor Research brand. It is amazing.
What do you hope to show others, through your ambassadorship with Vampire Outdoors?
Through my ambassadorship with Vampires Outdoors, I hope to show others that the outdoors is for everyone, no matter their size, shape, or experience level. I want to encourage people to break free from the idea that they need a ‘perfect’ body or expensive gear to enjoy outdoor activities. It’s about feeling empowered in your body, embracing the joy of movement, and finding adventure in your own way.
I also want to highlight how having the right clothing—designed for comfort, performance, and fit—can make a huge difference in how we experience the outdoors. It’s not just about looking good; it’s about feeling confident and capable.
Ultimately, I want others to know that they belong in this space, and that their journey, however imperfect, is worth celebrating. Whether it’s their first walk in the park or a challenging cycling goal, they deserve to feel included, supported, and inspired.
If you had some advice for a plus size person interested in getting into the activities you do, what would you say?
My advice to anyone in a plus-sized body interested in getting into outdoor activities is simple: just start. Don’t wait until you feel ‘ready’ or until you think you need to change something about yourself—you’re already enough as you are. The outdoors doesn’t have a size limit, and every small step, whether it’s a short walk, a beginner bike ride, or just getting out in nature, counts.
Start with what feels comfortable for you, and don’t worry about keeping up with anyone else. Invest in clothing that fits well and makes you feel good, because comfort goes a long way in building confidence. Brands like Vampires Outdoors are making it easier to find well-fitting, functional clothing, so you don’t have to compromise on quality.
Lastly, be kind to yourself. You don’t have to be the fastest or go the furthest— what matters is that you’re moving, exploring, and doing something for yourself. Celebrate every bit of progress, because you’re doing something amazing!
And if you are needing someone to speak to, reach out to me. I will talk through any worries with you and if you live in the North East of Scotland or are willing to travel- give me a message and we can walk and talk. There is nothing more powerful than people supporting people.
